Duncan College

Culture & Arts Committee

We at Culture & Arts strive to provide Duncaroos with affordable arts opportunities inside and outside of the hedges. We believe that art engagement nourishes our Duncan culture(s) !

The 2016-17 Committee Heads:

Ariyaneh Nikbin- an18@rice.edu

Craig Joiner- clj1@rice.edu

Here's some of what we do:

We produce short plays for and by Duncaroos. Last year, we staged Samuel Beckett's Krapp's Last Tape and Fernando Arrabal's Guernica. We plan culture nights with food, drink, music, dance, and performances. Last year, we celebrated Caribbean Culture Night, Brazilian Culture Night, and Korean Culture Night.  This fall semester, we will enjoy Jewish Culture Night and Russian Culture Night. Get excited for exotic foods you’ve never tried and some that you can’t even pronounce! Feel free to help out if you can as well! Throughout the year, Culture & Arts will have many opportunities for the Duncan community to be a part of the magic, from volunteering during our big events, to coordinating our group outings!

We invade the Master's House and install living room art shows. Last year's theme was ALIEN. This year's theme is undecided but we would love for you to share some of your own ideas! Submit your art (film, music, sculpture, painting, drawing, and performance) by emailing duncanarts@gmail.com.  Also, we’re planning an empty room exhibition which will feature some of the art works by students all over campus in a unique way.

We organize film, theater, and museum outings to the MFAH, the Menil, Edwards Greenway Plaza, Rice Dance Theater, Catastrophic Theatre, Sundance, and the Black Lab Theatre. Outings are followed by a conversation hour. Most of our outings are completely subsidized for the first 10-20 Duncaroos who reserve tickets. If you're interested in coordinating an outing, send your outing idea to duncanarts@gmail.com! We will take all suggestions into consideration and respond to you in a timely fashion.
