Transportation

On-Campus

There are a great variety of ways to get around the Rice Campus.

  • Bikes are great to have around campus since they can take you to Rice Village quickly. They are popular around Rice and there is even a bike repair shop in Sid Richardson residential college.
  • Longboards are also a great way to get around campus.
  • On campus, Rice offers several free buses and shuttles which make stops all around campus. The inner loop bus takes you around the main academic buildings and to the parking lot. The best part is that they are always running and you don’t even have to show your Rice ID! The Rice iPhone app uses GPS trackers on every bus to help you figure out when your bus will arrive. The bus runs Monday through Friday from 6:00 AM to 10:45 PM every 5-8 minutes.
Off-Campus

If you chose to go ‘beyond the hedges’ (outside the bounds of Rice campus), you can get to your destination without a car and even without spending any money!

  • Don’t have a car? There are several zipcars parked on campus that you can easily rent for a couple of hours. You can easily make an account by following this website: Rice Zipcars
  • Order an Uber on your phone using the Uber app (drivers are available at pretty much every time and day of the week).
  • Want to eat out? The Rice Village Bus takes you into Rice village for Friday and Saturday nights so that you can grab dinner with your friends. The bus runs from 5:30 PM to 12:30 AM every 30 minutes.
  • Need to go shopping? On Saturday, there are shopping shuttles that can take you to and from Target and Fiesta. The bus runs 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM, every 30 minutes
  • Also, Rice gives all students free entry to the Houston light rail which has two stops right outside campus. This public transportation system can take you to so many places including: Downtown Houston, Chinatown, the Galleria, Target, the Airport, and the Bus Terminal. You can look at the map here or you can use Houston Metro’s website to plan your trip for you. It’s extremely helpful and easy to plan ahead!
  • There is a Night Escort Service that you can call if you feel even a little nervous about walking back to Duncan College at night. The bus will pick you up wherever you are on campus if you call (713) 348-6000 Sunday through Thursday, 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM.
  • Don’t forget! Roughly half the students on campus have cars, so if you don’t have one there’s a good chance your friend might!
Airport Transportation

There are a few reliable, economical ways to get between Rice and the airport.

  • The two closest airports in Houston are the William P. Hobby Airport and the George Bush Intercontinental Airport.
  • A supershuttle which will pick you up from the airport and drop you off on campus if you plan your trip using their website. Use the promo code OWS1 for a Rice discount.
  • Order an Uber on your phone using the Uber app (drivers are available at pretty much every time and day of the week).
  • You can also rent cars at the airport and use google maps for directions.
  • You can use take the light rail south to the Dryden/TMC stop if your coming from Hobby Airport. It stops about every 15 minutes on weekdays and every 30 minutes on the weekend.
  • If you’re coming from IAH, take the north light rail towards UH/Downtown. Get off at the Downtown Transit Center stop,  which is about a 10 minute ride from Rice. You'll need to walk to the Airport direct plaza which is a bit behind the Transit Center building across the street from the bus terminals.
